Dear all:
GDP turns 80 this year. I would like to survey your opinion with respect to pooling our energies and build a coordinated campaign to convince as many governments as possible to let go of GDP this year. We are doing this in Africa, where I have speaking at the African Union and will be speaking in Namibia and Nigeria on the occasion of their GDP-rebasing. It would be great if, after the Nature article, we could put together a temporary “emergency unit” to see how much we can achieve this year. Perhaps plan a series of meetings across the world? Or one single coordinated event in which we all decide to “stand against GDP” on the same day and organize seminars and public debates at our universities? We are open to all suggestions. We need to keep the momentum and up our visibility, also outside of academic circles.
What we are doing in ASAP is indeed to focus attention towards dethroning GDP. I like your idea Lorenzo to come to a a common view on this issue on the 80th anniversary of GDP. The question is where and how we who are interested should meet and discuss or whether we should instigate a web conference?
Thanks for your reply Kristin. I think we could try and discuss the possibility of a meeting (perhaps a video conference) to coordinate our initiatives for 2014 and see how we can build synergies to increase our impact. Anyone else?
I would like to bring to your attention my recent piece for openDemocracy: “GDP Turns 80, Time to Retire”: http://www.opendemocracy.net/openeconomy/lorenzo-fioramonti/gdp-turns-80-time-to-retire-0
